The Hidden Forces Shaping Organisational Change

Why do organisations invest so much in change, yet still struggle with resistance, engagement and turning strategy into sustained behaviour?

Perhaps part of the answer lies in something we don't spend enough time talking about: what sits beneath the surface.

In Episode 77 of The Human Factor Podcast, I join the wonderful Michael Esau and Simon Humphreys from SAP. It made for a fascinating and very different conversation about the relationship between psychology, organisational culture and change.

We explore the conscious and unconscious forces that influence how people respond to change, why compliance is very different from genuine commitment, the role leaders play in creating the conditions for people to move forward, and why getting closer to where work actually happens can tell us far more than another programme report.

We also explore AI. Not simply what the technology can do, but what it may mean for identity, purpose, creativity and our relationship with work. As organisations redesign work around AI, and the challenges for organisations to consider whether that redesign needs to be psychological and cultural as well as structural.

We spend a lot of time trying to change what people do. Perhaps we need to spend more time understanding what is influencing how they think and feel in the first place.

A thought-provoking conversation and a very different perspective on a challenge almost every organisation is wrestling with.

A huge thank you to Michael and Simon for giving me the opportunity to share my views on the SAP podcast.
