The Neurotic Organisation

#JBOI Insights

The first blog in the seven-part series starts Thursday 2 July. The initial blogs will look at the nature of hidden 'unconscious' forces in organisations and show how they impede business success by inhibiting effective strategy making, organisational structuring, group dynamics, leadership and decision-making. The last blogs will focus on how to make organisations more effective from the 'inside' out, discovering dysfunctional patterns in individuals and teams, bringing them out in the open, and eradicating them.

Part 1 (2 Jul): Neurotic personality styles of leaders and managers of troubled companies. Find out more about medically recognised neurotic personality styles and their impact in the workplace.

Part 2 (9 Jul): Dysfunctional group dynamics detracting from the company's primary organisational task, group fantasies and organisational myths. Discover how departments, teams can be derailed by group unconscious dynamics.

Part 3 (16 Jul): The other side of grievance culture: Transferential patterns of employees and organisational leaders/managers that lead to frustration, anger, and confusion in interpersonal situations. Discover 'transference', a concept usually confined to psychotherapy and missing from HR policy making. Transference occurs when an individual attempts to solve a past relationship with a significant other by unconsciously re-enacting the dilemma at work. This has implications for the leader/manager and employee 'relationship'.

Part 4 (23 Jul): Improper modes by which a leader/manager 'binds' (micromanagement), 'abandons' (takes no interest, no guidance or support), or 'proxies' (provides vicarious thrills for the employee, performs dangerous and unacceptable missions) individuals in their team.

Part 5 (30 Jul): Lifecycle related crisis during a manager's career. I will look at the challenges and opportunities that work presents for the different Generations (Baby Boomers to Millennials) with a close look at the impact of AI in the workplace.

Part 6 (20 Aug): Resistance to change. Using psychoanalytic concepts, we look at individual 'unconscious' defence mechanisms that impede business success.

Part 7 (27 Aug): Transformation: From 'Neurotic to Healthy' Organisation. Intervention techniques to facilitate change.

The blog aims to provide leaders, managers and employees with insights that motivate practical and enduring personal and organisational change.
